Of all my favourite souvenirs to bring home from my travels, food & drink tend to bring the memories flooding back the fastest.

Something about the combination of scent, texture, and taste makes all the memories come alive instantaneously!

So today when I made a summer afternoon sandwich with the second-to-last serving of red caramelized onion chutney that I brought home from the Cotswolds this June, I couldn’t help but think of all the other favourite foods I enjoy when traveling through the English countryside on my annual Women’s Walking Retreat.

Of course food is best when shared, so here is a visual buffet of the cuisine I miss most when I’m not working up an appetite while traipsing across sheep-dotted farmland and through ancient limestone villages.

1) Afternoon cream tea. But specifically clotted (THICK) cream spread across scones & accompanied by a luscious swirl of strawberry jam. 🍓

2) A savour ploughman’s board featuring meats, local cheeses, hearty bread, chutneys & pickles. 🧀

3) Local hard cider with a splash of black current liqueur or syrup. Lightly fruity, refreshing after a long walk. Half-pint size is JUST RIGHT! 🍺

4) Classic Sunday Roast with all the fixings. Don’t worry, my farm-fresh green veg have just been doused with gravy. 🥬

5) Gin-centric cocktails. With grapefruit & elderflower thank you very much. 🍹

6) Local, lightly dressed greens as my side. Fresh and fiber-licious! 🥗

7) Pot pie with veg & gravy on the side. I cannot say no to pastry. 🥧

8) Hearty seasonal soups, fresh bread, and grass-fed (is there REALLY any other option!?) butter. 🐄

9) Lamb. I mean, it IS Cotswold country after all. 🐑

10) Carmelized red onion chutney. Luscious, sweet & savoury. The perfect condiment on a summer sandwich. ☀️

Just the way my middle has to put her feet down on

Just the way my middle has to put her feet down on the peeling paint porch in order to rock back and forth feels like the last vestiges of little girl. Toes barely touching if she sits back, so she has to scoot forward and spread her feet apart to get the rocking chair going.

According to Will she’s got quite the lead foot when it comes to driving (him helping obviously) the buggy around the pasture, so I’ll hold onto as much of the little girl as I can before this feisty girl gains more independence!

Also, I chose some lyrics to accompany this shot and the late, great Tony Bennet singing “Just the Way You Look Tonight” felt just right. This is one of my most favourite songs of all time and Tony singing it was 👌. What a legend.
