I’ve just finished weatherproofing my beloved @t I’ve just finished weatherproofing my beloved @thenorthface hiking boots for the last time, and my heart is a little sad about that. 😢

See these boots have been with me ever since my first solo overseas trip in 2006 when I was 23.

I remember calling my VERY intrepid, hiking boot expert of a mom from an outdoors store in Vancouver while trying to determine what boots to buy for a 4-month stint as a stock photographer in Spain & Morocco.

She did her best to advise me over the phone, but in the end, I just had to go with what felt best. And while new shoes or boots rarely feel ideal, these ones fit like a glove from the very beginning. And WOW, have they ever delivered!

My @thenorthface boots have never failed to keep my feet warm & dry in over a dozen countries, and somehow in their 16-year lifespan, the tread has held up incredibly well. Granted they’re not used on a daily basis during my everyday life, but they are used periodically throughout the year.

From their inaugural breaking in as I crossed the Strait of Gibraltar for the first time, to their tentative steps along the foot-wide rice terraces in northern Luzon, to their daily lace-ups while riding the Trans-Siberian Railway, to the time the left boot had to take a backseat while I was on crutches after my camel accident in Wadi Rum, to the mud-caked treads I repeatedly scraped while plodding through farmers’ fields and cobbled villages in the Cotswolds, these boots have been (at times) my sole companions (haha pun very much intended 🙃) on the trail.

I’m so excited to take these boots on one last adventure before I retire them and seek out a fresh pair. Of course I’ll be checking out @thenorthface first! I’m loathe to give them up, but I can tell they are on their last legs (🤪sorry, I can’t help myself).

Let’s do this ladies! 🥾🥾

PS // Not an ad or sponsored post, I just like sharing products that have served me well!

Can’t wait for a gorgeous Okanagan summer and to jump into the lake as many days as possible!

I am kind of obsessed with children’s literature I am kind of obsessed with children’s literature set in England, especially when the illustrations are truly special.

So I’ve been delighted to discover in the past month that Travis is at the perfect age to fall in love with all things Beatrix Potter, just like his older sisters did.

Potter’s stories are not only beautifully illustrated, which always helps my kids (and of course myself) stay interested in children’s books, but they personify animals in such a delightful way that Travis especially has become hooked! He also loves the little songs and rhymes that Potter integrated into her stories.

Yesterday I picked up a set of Beatrix Potter books from Costco and after the kids had helped me unload the groceries, all 3 lost themselves in the books for a solid hour. Which is amazing to me, particularly because of their varying ages.

Lauren, 8, read silently, but because of the more antiquated vocabulary, wanted clarification here and there. Natalie is 6 and sat reading in her halting, new reader manner, but because pages are short and the words relatively easy to sound out, she plodded through with gusto. Travis, 3, has been listening not only to my read-aloud renditions of about a half dozen of Potter’s tales, but an audio version of them all, so he’s memorized parts of numerous stories. He also thinks that when he retells the stories aloud he needs to begin with the phrase, “This is Audible”. 😆

If an author can capture the attention of 3 children at various ages and stages of reading, what an incredible gift that writer commands! No wonder Beatrix Potter has endured! 🐇

While we won’t be heading to Beatrix Potter’s beloved Lake District while in England this summer, I am very much looking forward to classic English literature coming alive for our kids as we traverse the countryside and step into the world of so many of our favourites: Beatrix Potter, Kenneth Grahame (Wind in the Willows), A. A. Milne (Winnie the Pooh), C. S. Lewis (Narnia), James Herriot (All Creatures Great and Small), and more.

Do you have a favourite children’s author or book? I’d love your recommendations! Feel free to leave them in the comments below. 📚
