Our family made this fragrant and beautiful fire cider the day after American Thanksgiving, will let it ferment for about a month, and then crack it open sometime after Christmas. Taken in small doses chased with raw honey, this potent immunity booster will help see us through the rest of the cold and flu season! Have you ever tried making fire cider? What do you put in yours? Here is what we included in our 2024 batch: - 1 small onion cut up - 3 small meyer lemons fresh from our tree and sliced - Several sprigs of rosemary and oregano from our garden - A few sprigs of thyme - 1 bulb of garlic with cloves peeled - half a dozen slices of turmeric with skin on - 1 small ginger root, sliced with skin on - half a dozen peppercorns and half a dozen whole cloves - 3 cinnamon sticks - apple cider vinegar #bringinginspirationhome #slowliving #homeschoolmom #cleaneating #immunesupport #firecider
Yesterday my Uber driver was an older gentleman wh Yesterday my Uber driver was an older gentleman who returns to Mexico several times a year to visit his elderly parents. They are 105 and 109 years old!!! He told me the secret to their longevity was in what they ate…and what they did not eat (processed food, so no surprise there!). As we head into the holiday season, I thought about the gluttony, food waste, and ill health coming around the corner, and was inspired to be just a little more conscious about my food choices BEFORE the festivities commence, rather than after they’re over and we are all looking for a fresh start in January. Anyone who lives to 100 or beyond knows a thing or two about slow living, and I’m ready and willing to absorb all of the wisdom and inspiration they have to offer. I hope that I too, love to one day shock a middle-aged mom with my 100+ years of sage yet simple advice. Having grown up in Canada, I can recall hearing Jo Having grown up in Canada, I can recall hearing John McCrae’s poem, ‘In Flanders Fields’ recited yearly at Remembrance Day school assemblies. The elementary school gym, dimly lit to encourage an ambience of solemnity, was decorated with each classroom’s collection of paper plate wreaths and cardboard crosses, sticky with Elmer’s white glue and crinkly red tissue paper poppies. A live performance of ‘The Last Post’ echoed through the vast room while a lineup of decked out and decorated, worn and wrinkled veterans peered out at throngs of squirming kids trying to sit still and cross-legged on the polished gymnasium floor. I didn’t know it then, but that yearly rhythm would forever ensure I took time as an adult to mark the remembrance of those who served and sacrificed for my freedoms. Until very recently, I had never seen red poppies. It was in the English countryside where I first encountered small clusters of the delicate blood-red variety. I was fascinated by seeing the real thing for the first time in my life. When I finally had the chance to witness a full-fledged field of red poppies, McCrae’s iconic poem sprang to mind. One day I hope to make it to Flanders with my kids where we’ll stand and recite ‘In Flanders Fields’ and gaze out upon an endless sea of bright red poppies. In the meantime, I wear a poppy on my lapel every November, like so many others across the Commonwealth, and like many used to do here in the United States, as a reminder to remember. Here’s why they’re a travel must-have for me: • An easy way to track bags - not just on flights. I appreciate knowing where my camera bag or purse is while traveling. • The cost is far cheaper than the cost and hassle of lost luggage. • I can use my phone to locate the air tag with sound and directions when in range. • The batteries last well over a year. • The slip into little holders that attach easily to key rings etc. While I’m not super big into wearable tech and am wary about how so much tech affects our health, I’m more than happy to use Apple Air Tags for travel.
