I was burned out, but a week of walking through the English countryside proved to be life changing. Join me in the Cotswolds for an experience that offers inspiration & restoration.

Today was one of my kids’ first hikes of the sea

Today was one of my kids’ first hikes of the season due to 4 months of rain and some of our favourite spots being closed on account of storm damage. A very strange California winter indeed!

Of course there was some grumbling along the vein of ‘too hot’, ‘so tired’, and ‘I’m hungry’, which reminded me of my last post wherein I recognized that I often focus on the negative issues or worries that plague me instead of gazing steadily on the beauty around me.

Once the kids had taken their eyes off of their discomforts, (and I will say that those were primarily experienced on the inclines) and focused on the beauty…also on the distraction of flinging rocks off an embankment, it was amazing how the heat, steepness, and hunger seemed to evaporate.

Again another lesson for me to take to heart: that the seemingly unbearable conditions which inspire my grumbling often fade into the background when I choose to focus on (or interact with) the beauty that surrounds me.

Yesterday I read something (and can’t find it no

Yesterday I read something (and can’t find it now in order to credit properly) about how we gaze at/focus on what troubles us more than the beauty we only glance at.

It’s so easy for me to fixate on the negative or worry about the uncertain. But beauty abounds, and I would do well to turn my intentional gaze towards whatever is true, and beautiful, and lovely, and let it linger there, rather than provide nature’s splendor with a cursory glance.

Society has fabricated paltry comparisons to the beauty that nature offers. Those facsimiles often tempt me to look inward. But nature’s beauty draws my eyes heavenward, towards an eternal beauty.

So the next time you breeze past the @traderjoes flower arrangements, stroll past a sidewalk shrub humming with bees, feel the dewy grass skirt your ankles, or squint into the sunset on the drive home, consider basking in the beauty for just an extra moment.
